Changing Your Covered California Plan FAQs

Want to switch to a different health plan? Learn when you can change plans, what qualifies for mid-year changes, and how to make the switch.

When Can I Change My Plan?

You can change your Covered California plan:

  • During Open Enrollment (Nov 1 - Jan 31)
  • During a Special Enrollment Period after a qualifying life event
  • When your subsidy amount changes significantly

Switching During Open Enrollment

During annual Open Enrollment, you can:

  • Switch to any available plan or metal tier
  • Change insurance carriers
  • Add or remove family members
  • Update your income information

Changes made during Open Enrollment take effect January 1st.

Mid-Year Plan Changes

Outside Open Enrollment, you can only change plans if you have a qualifying life event such as:

  • Marriage, divorce, or domestic partnership
  • Birth or adoption of a child
  • Moving to a new county
  • Significant income change affecting subsidy level
Note: Simply wanting a different plan is not a qualifying event for mid-year changes.

How to Change Your Plan

  1. Log in to your Covered California account
  2. Report any life changes if applicable
  3. Browse available plans
  4. Select your new plan
  5. Confirm the change and note your new effective date
