Switching Mid-Year (Special Enrollment)
Outside open enrollment, you can only switch plans if you have a qualifying life event that triggers a Special Enrollment Period:
Common Qualifying Events
- Lost other coverage (job-based insurance, COBRA, Medi-Cal)
- Got married or divorced
- Had a baby or adopted a child
- Moved to a new county with different plan options
- Income changed significantly (affects subsidy eligibility)
You have 60 days from the qualifying event to switch plans. You'll need to provide documentation proving the event occurred.
Cannot Switch Without Qualifying Event: If you just want to switch because you found a better plan or don't like your current plan, you must wait until the next open enrollment period unless you have a qualifying life event.
