Vision coverage is available at any time through VSP, EyeMed, or Blue Shield. I suggest applying for whichever company your preferred optometrist accepts. You can view the plan choices, and apply online at the websites listed below.

VSP

VSP is a not-for-profit company that offers instant enrollment with no waiting period since it is a 12-month commitment. No ID card is required to receive care. A VSP Provider can look you up in their system 24 hours after you enroll. VSP offers a robust Network with over 5,000 network doctors in California. They also Include retailers such as Costco, Walmart, and Sam’s Club. However, they do not work with Lenscrafters. VSP uses Eyeconic Optics as its online retailer.

BlueShield

Blue Shield’s vision plans offer access to more than 11,000 providers in California, and 134,000 ophthalmologists, optometrists, and opticians nationwide. They also provide access to major retail chains, including Costco, Walmart, LensCrafters, and independent eye care providers. Receive valuable LASIK discounts through QualSight LASIK and NVISION Laser Eye Centers. You can also purchase contact lenses online with no claim forms or paperwork. Blue Shield uses MESVision Optics as its online retailer.

Blue Shield’s monthly rates are roughly half the price of VSP & EyeMed. There is also no 12-month commitment, but there is a 90-day waiting period before you can use the plan. The coverage will start on the 1st of the following month if you apply by the 15th.
